It’s really difficult to define what makes a great book. It’s deeply personal. Perhaps one way we might define a great book is to think about it’s personal relationship so the reader keeps going back again and again. There’s something about the book that speaks directly to you and about you. One of my favourite books is a tale of two cities by Charles Dickens and it’s an emotional roller coaster with highs and lows, making you feel joy one minute and despair the next and that mood is created right from the very opening and I’ll read a section of that now. it was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair. We had everything before us, we had nothing before us. And it’s that mood that the novel creates from the very beginning that makes it so very special to me
