Have you ever seen an English-English dictionary? a monolingual dictionary? This one is the Macmillan English Dictionary for advanced learners I think it’s bigger than a Bible you might be thinking now: “No way! I’m not gonna use that at all” Never mind! This one is my dear dictionary
I use it a lot However, you can find online dictionaries and you can use them You have the Macmillan one, ok
It’s free You will also find the Oxford dictionary for free as well and I’m gonna give you some tips on How to use this dictionary and enrich your learning. Well, one of the benefits that I think is when you use a translator you have the meaning of the word in your first language
In your Language 1 But you don’t learn anything else However, when you use a monolingual dictionary you learn: How to use a word,
the pronunciation, you correct yourself
the use of prepositions if it is gerund or not of infinitive
if it is a noun
an adjective the phrasal verbs
the expressions so you can benefit a lot
you can enrich a lot your English when you use a monolingual dictionary you can get the most out of learning Now I want know a little bit of the difference of using a dictionary and a translator I will type on Google the word “foco” in Portuguese it will be translated into English The translation will be “focus” I really like Google I’m not telling you that you shouldn’t use the Google Translator I just wanna show you the difference when learning a word If you have a monolingual dictionary or an online one, for instance I will type the work focus and I will see the frequency the work is used by a native person I can see on the top that
there are 3 stars for the work focus It means that a native person uses it a lot
I will have the indication that it’s a verb intransitive and transitive I can listen to the pronunciation
and see the phonetic symbols as well I can see the definition in English
the prepositions here I see that For example: here I see that focus means to concentrate and I can see that I can use focus on or focus upon focus attention on something
focus your mind on something
and so on in blue we have all the examples
so you can know how to use the word appropriately and at the end of the picture
I took for you we can see some synonyms such as
concentrate, focus, listen so we could see in this example that
by using a monolingual dictionary I can learn the frequency
the pronunciation the prepositions
how to use it by checking the examples in blue the synonyms so It’s something very interesting
that’s why I like encouraging everybody to use Oxford or Macmillan or any other dictionary
that you have This advice applies not only for those who are learning English but to those who are learning Portuguese too Write on the comments if those suggestions have worked for you the way they work for me Subscribe to my channel because I intend to post more videos about learning English about how to improve it
