Hello, I’m Joseph Pearce and I teach for
Homeschool Connections. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar
Wilde and why you should take my class on it.
Oscar Wilde is one of the most controversial writers of the 19th
century. A leader of what became known as the Decadent Movement of the so called
Naughty 90s, at the end of the 19th century. And the Picture of Dorian Gray is
one of the most controversial novels written during the whole of that century.
But, and what many people don’t know is it is a profoundly moral book. A
profoundly Catholic book. And it teaches us some very very important lessons
about pride, about humility, about self gratification, and the dangers inherent
in a life of selfishness. And it has an amazing twist at the ending, which I
won’t tell you now because I don’t want to spoil it for you. But Oscar Wilde was
received into the Catholic Church on his deathbed in 1900. It was a consummation
of his lifelong love affair with the Catholic Church. This novel is proof of
Wilde’s love for Catholicism. Please join me in the course on the Picture Dorian
Gray by Oscar Wilde.
