The Clever Jeweler. Once upon a time – there was a king who was very proud of being wise. He believed that in his entire kingdom there is not even one person who can fool him and escape. One day, he said this to his ministers. All of them agreed to him, except one. The kind got really surprised. Don’t you believe that it is impossible to fool me? No, highness. I don’t believe that. It is possible that this applies on others. But I know very well that some jewelers still cheat their customers in our kingdom. ‘I don’t believe’, the king said, ‘I will call all the jewelers and talk to them myself’. Next morning, the king summoned all the jewelers of his state. Following the order, all of them arrived. Everyone was clueless, ‘What exactly is the matter is the matter? Why has the king called us?’ One of them asked – ‘Is there some urgent preparation of a wedding or coronation going on in the royal family?’ “Maybe, the queens are bored of their old jewelries and willing to melt them and make newer ones’, the other replied. ‘No’, a third jeweler responded. ‘Queens use to call us by themselves’ ‘This matter seems be related with the king’. ‘In my opinion, the king wants to send some gifts to the neighboring kingdom and he maybe in a rush to get the jewelries prepared’, another jeweler said. ‘There is no point in making such presumptions’, Madan, who was the youngest among all other jewelers, said
‘King will himself tell what is the matter’. ‘King will himself tell what is the matter’. Meanwhile, the king entered the room. ‘I have called all of you to ask one simple and straight question and I expect that you will all speak the truth’, the king said. If I would give you some gold to prepare something, can any of you steal even a fraction of it without letting me know? And if you have to do this in the observation of somebody, is it still possible to commit the theft?’ A silence prevailed in the room.
‘Yes?’, the king asked again while staring at the keenly, ‘Speak up’. The jewelers started looking at each-other’s faces.
‘We can take out one fourth part of it’, some jewelers said.
‘We can take out half out of it’, few others said.
‘And if I wish, I can vanish it all, entirely!’, Madan said.
The king looked at him carefully from head to toe. ‘I don’t trust you, but you can try for once’, the king said to Madan. ‘You will come to the palace everyday and there, you will wear clothes that will be provided by me. I will give you gold and you will prepare an idol of Ganpati from it, in my presence. Whenever I will go outside, my bodyguard will keep a watch on you. And while going back to your home, you will be leaving everything behind. You will wear your old clothes again and while stepping out of the palace you will be checked properly. Until you are not done with preparing the Ganpati idol, only this will be your daily schedule’. ‘Ok, highness’, Madan replied joyfully. ‘Think about it once again, will you be able to do this?’,
the king asked. ‘Yes, King. I believe that I will be able to do this’, madan said.
‘If you become successful in your motive, then I will make you wed with my daughter and will also give you half fraction of my kingdom’, the king said,’…but if you will fail in your attempt then you will be boycotted from this kingdom forever’. ‘As you say, dear King’, madan once again responded with a smile.
‘Keep in mind that my bodyguards will always be around, keeping a sight on you’, the king said.
‘You have gone mad, madan’, other jewelers told.
‘You know that you are not able to do this! And why only you, nobody can make it happen in such a tight security.’ that you are not able to do this! And why only you, nobody can make it happen in such a tight security.’ ‘But I can definitely do it’, he said to them with confidence. Next morning, Madan arrived at the palace Madan at the earliest.
He changed his clothes, took his tools, and begun the job. The guards of the king used to surround him all the time. the king as well used to stay somewhere around him. Madan used to do his job of melting the gold, shaping and carving it, sincerely. He was totally unaffected by the crowd surrounding him. After working for the whole day,
padta tha.deinbhar ki mehnat ke baad, apne he used to wear his own clothes once again, would give all the things back to the king’s people and leave towards his home. he used to wear his own clothes once again, would give all the things back to the king’s people and leave towards his home. But, he used to do one strange thing after reaching home. About which, nobody knew. Madan was making an exactly similar Ganesha idol from brass, on which he used to work at night. After his hard work for all day long in the security of king’s people, he used to hideously prepare the brass idol in which his sister would also help him sometimes. he used to hideously prepare the brass idol in which his sister would also help him sometimes. Finally, after seven long days, both idols were ready. On the seventh day, Madan showed the gold idol to everybody. ‘Is is complete now?’, there was an excitement in the king’s voice. ‘Almost, Emperor, just a bit of finishing is left’, madan replied. ‘We will have to sunk and soak the idol in fresh curd overnight and then next I will give it shine on next morning’. this is extremely important.’. ‘Really?’, the kind was astonished. ‘At least I have not heard about anybody giving shine to an idol using curd.’. ‘This is my technique’, madan said. ‘May I please get a big pitcher of curd?’ ‘This is my technique’, madan said. ‘May I please get a big pitcher of curd?’ ‘Now only this is also one excellent demand!’, the king’s guard responded. ‘From where may curd come at this time of evening?’ ‘Usually, people put the curd for curdling at during night so that it may get prepared till morning. If you required fresh curd, why did not you ask in the morning? We would have put some curd for curdling’. ‘I forgot it completely’, madan bola.
‘Can we not get it from the market?’ At the same time, they saw a lady walking towards the street, carrying a big pitcher on her head. ‘What are you selling?’, the guard shouted and asked. ‘Fresh curd’, the lady responded. ‘Today, I got late in coming from home and my curd did not sell’. ‘Now, I am taking it back’. ‘Wait’, the king’s servant said, ‘Bring it here,
we will buy it’. ‘Thanks to God’, Madan said. ‘I was getting worried if we don’t get curd then what will I do’. The girl came with the pitcher of curd. ‘Firstly, I will check it out’, Madan said, ‘whether it is good or not?’. Unless I will be paid for it, I won’t even let your hand touch the pitcher! It is fresh stuff.’ ‘If you will make it dirty, it won’t even sell in half of its price, getting it?’ ‘Okay, Okay, Fine! We are buying it’, peeking into the pitcher, Madan said.’ ‘It looks okay.’, saying this, he dipped the Ganesha idol into the pitcher. The king gave gold coins to the girl. She was about to leave but Madan called her again. ‘I did not like this curd’. He said, it is way too watery and this will not bring that kind of shine in the idol. I will get fresh curd tomorrow morning and will do my job.’. ‘And should I make pickle of this curd?’,
the girl responded in anger. ‘Nobody will buy it now!’ ‘And should I make pickle of this curd?’,
the girl responded in anger. ‘Nobody will buy it now!’ ‘Eat, throw, do whatever that comes in your mind!’, Madan said while taking out the idol from the pitcher. ‘And don’t you dare to do more blabbering here’.aur khabardaar zyada badbad ki toh’. ‘Have you forgotten?, the king has already paid you the price of it.’ The girl picked up the pitcher and left from there, blabbering. Next day, Madan nicely shined the idol with fresh curd and gave it in the hands of king. The king then called his Gold expert. ‘Check this out and tell how much gold has been taken out of it’. The expert started checking the idol. But, even after checking it multiple times, he was not able to understand anything. ‘Speak up!’ ‘What is the matter?’, the king was losing patience. ‘Your highness, this has not even a bit of gold’. ‘How can it be possible?’, the king was totally shocked and clueless. ‘I had myself given him the gold, and even he made the idol right in front of me. He was not allowed to take even a single thing out of the room. even he made the idol right in front of me. He was not allowed to take even a single thing out of the room.’ ‘I don’t know all that, but what I know is that this idol is made up of all brass and nothing else. This has got no signs of gold’, the expert said.
‘This is amazing!’, the king was surprised. ‘Didn’t I say, I can do it?’, Madan said while smiling.
Ultimately, the king asked from Madan, how exactly did he manage to spoof him. ‘Emperor, are you promising me that you will not punish me on my revealing the truth?’, Madan asked. ‘Have faith, I won’t give you punishment’, the king replied. Finally, Madan told all the story – That curd-selling girl was actually his sister, who had arrived there at the same timing. When that girl had come in the palace, Madan had put the gold idol into the pitcher and taken the brass one out of it. Initially, the king felt surprised by listening to the story and then he bursted into laughter. ‘Brother, Wow! You turned out to be extremely smart.’ How well have you fooled us all! I was unable to accept at any cost that someone can fool me too, in this way. But you have proved me wrong.’ As per the promise, Madan got married to the princess and even the half kingdom was given to him. After becoming a king, Madan didn’t do any cheating any longer.
